SMART GROWTH & NEW URBANISMSmart Growth and New Urbanism go hand in hand. The goal is to eliminate sprawl, to reduce dependence on the automobile, to conserve resources and to encourage human interaction. Carriage Hill Landing gets a virtually perfect score on the Smart Growth index. Downtown is a quick walk to the west, the Riverwalk leads off to the east. The Powow River borders the site. On another edge of the site is an intermodal transit center with access to commuter rail. This is the rare suburban location where a working couple could live with just one car. When you are driving, two major interstates are just minutes away. Everyone talks about New Urbanism - developers carefully (and expensively) create picturesque downtown settings for their new residential projects. Amesbury’s downtown has been beautifully restored, yet it retains its century-old character as a place where real people live and work. This is a charming little city - not in any way a plastic recreation. Downtown Amesbury is a perfect example of what the industry has been striving to recreate. |
